What is the deposit on building permits and why do I have to pay it?
The building permit by-law for the joint building services requires that a refundable deposit in the amount of $700.00 be paid at the time a permit is obtained, where the value of construction is more than $50,000.00.
The deposit provides security against the following: i. the Municipality having to repair damage to any public roads, ditches, curbs or sidewalks, or other public works and services caused by the owner or contractor; or, ii. the Municipality having to remove building materials, waste and soil that is spilled, tracked or blown onto public highways from the construction site.
The Chief Building Official will collect the $700.00 deposit at the time of issuing the construction permit. The deposit will remain with the municipality until the final inspection has been carried out by the Building Inspector, and all parties are satisfied that no damage has occurred or additional work is required by the municipality. The deposit will be reimbursed by the municipality to the property owner at the next available cheque run and following regular Council meeting approval.
Final inspections can be arranged by calling 1-866-414-0088 or 613-395-5166.
